APSU Basketball slow start costly at Wofford

APSU Men's Basketball - Austin Peay State UniversitySpartanburg, SC – Despite 28 points for junior Josh Robinson, Austin Peay State University will not be sorry to see this three-game road trip come to an end after falling 96-77 to Wofford at Benjamin Johnson Arena, Thursday.

The Governors shot well (13-for-24, 54.2 percent) in the first half, but Wofford shot better, hitting 20 of 29 shots (69.0 percent) that included nine three-pointers.

The Terriers opened on a 14-5 run, but Austin Peay cut it to five on a Robinson dunk with 12:56 to go in the first half.

From there, Wofford went on another long 17-4 run to extend the lead to 18.

APSU Men's Basketball - Josh RobinsonAlthough Robinson and Chris Porter-Bunton would each score nine in the half, three Terriers—Fletcher Magee (16 points), Jaylen Allen (13) and Ryan Sawvell (12)—reached double figures in the opening 20 minutes and the Govs were down 55-31 heading into the locker room.

Robinson scored 19 second-half points and the Governors actually outshot Wofford (59.3 percent to 51.5 percent) over the final 20 minutes, the deficit proved too much to overcome.

Head coach Dave Loos shook up the lineup in the second half, with freshman Jartavious Dobbs (20 minutes) and junior Tre’ Ivory (21 minutes, 14 in the half) seeing their most extended playing time this season; Ivory equaled his career high with six points.

The Difference

Wofford hit 13 three-pointers, the third time this season and second in as many games that an opponent has hit 13 from beyond the arc against Austin Peay. Opponents are now hitting 39.3 percent (95-for-242) this season.

Notably

APSU Men's Basketball - Chris Porter-BuntonIt was Robinson’s first 20-point effort since November 30th, 2016 (vs. Fort Wayne).

For the second game in a row, all five of the opposing starters scored in double figures.

Porter-Bunton finished with 12 points, a season-high and the third time in 2016-17 he’s reached double figures. He also hit a career-high three three-pointers and equaled his career-best with two blocks.

Freshman Jartavious Dobbs had the best night of his young Austin Peay career. The freshman played a career-high 20 minutes, scored his first career points and led the Govs in rebounds (six) and blocks (two), both career-highs.

APSU Men's Basketball - Jartavious DobbsWofford shot 59.7 percent (37-for-62) from the floor, the highest percentage against the Govs in 2016-17 and the fourth game in a row that an opponent has shot better than 50 percent from the floor.

The Governors shot 56.9 percent (29-for-51) in their own right, their third-best mark of the season and best in a losing effort since shooting 58.0 percent (29-for-50) against Eastern Kentucky, February 22nd, 2014.

The Governors won the rebounding battle 29-28, the first time in four games Austin Peay won the battle of the boards.
