Clarksville, TN – The Austin Peay State University (APSU) beach volleyball team dominated the first day of the Governors Challenge, sweeping Tusculum, 5-0, Friday afternoon.
The sophomore duo of Caroline Waite and Nina Korfhage started off the dominance early winning in straight sets, 21-3, 21-17, against the No. 5 pairing of Danika Chaney and Catherine Clingan from Tusculum.
The Governors as a team took the lead early and created more distance between themselves and the Pioneers. Cori Theiss and Haley Turner put on a dominant performance at the No. 3 pairing, taking down Skyellar Hall and Gabby Gray, 21-6, 21-10, to seal the result for the Governors.
After the finishing of the No. 2 pairing, the Governors surrounded the Caffee Family Court donning their big, winter jackets to preserve themselves some heat and cheer on their teammates. Graduate transfer Ciera Koons and junior Ginny Gerig rolled through the cold and windy day to add the final point for the Governors in the No. 1 pairing against the Pioneers’ Melissa Mazar and Lana Vujosevic, winning 21-11, 21-17.
The Governors will face Missouri Baptist at 8:00am and Central Arkansas at noon of day two of the Governors Challenge. The Govs improved to 2-5 for the season and will look to continue their momentum, Saturday.
Be sure to follow the Governors on Twitter @AustinPeayBVB to receive updates throughout the weekend and come out to support the Govs Saturday morning right in front of the Dunn Center.
