Clarksville, TN – Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office reports a student at Northwest High School was taken into custody Tuesday morning after School Resource Officers discovered a firearm in his backpack.
The 14-year-old, 9th-grade student was carrying a .380 semiautomatic pistol with two rounds of ammunition loaded in the magazine.
School administration detected an odor of marijuana on the student and alerted the School Resource Officer. When questioned by SRO Green, the student admitted to having marijuana in his possession.

The firearm was found during a search of the student’s backpack.
“This incident shows how quickly things can escalate,” said Montgomery County Sheriff John Fuson. “This should highlight how important it is to notify law enforcement if you suspect something is wrong. If it is a behavior that you see, a threat that you hear, or as in this case, something that you smell, these clues can and will resolve a situation before it becomes a more serious situation.”
“I am very thankful the School Administrator was there when she was and took the action that she did. This allowed our SRO to prevent a potentially serious incident from occurring either on or off school campus,” said Sheriff Fuson.
The student will be charged with felony weapons on school grounds and simple possession
