Austin Peay State University to induct Melton Self into 2020 APSU Athletics Hall of Fame

Austin Peay State University Sports - APSU - Governors - Lady GovsClarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University (APSU) alumni Melton Self grew up in Alabama but certainly made his life—an impactful one—in Tennessee. But it almost didn’t happen. In fact, Self twice almost stayed in his home state, but thoughts of the Alabama coal mines got the better of him and changed his mind.

Self was born in Dora, Alabama, and starred as a prep running back at Dora High School alongside Ben Fendley. Football coach Dave Aaron offered both scholarships. Fendley readily accepted to come north to Tennessee and Austin Peay State University. But Self still had a year of high school eligibility remaining at Dora but accepted his offer a year later (1947).

APSU to induct Vanja Tomic Vidovic into 2020 Austin Peay State University Athletics Hall of Fame

Austin Peay State University Sports - APSU - Governors - Lady GovsClarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University (APSU) women’s tennis had ceased to be relevant. In the mid-1980s, APSU won a pair of Ohio Valley Conference championships and continued to contend for the title until the mid-1990s. But for some 15 years, APSU women’s tennis was an afterthought as far as the OVC was concerned.

But in 2010, a sophomore, Vanja Tomic Vidovic, transferred in the spring semester from NAIA program Lindsey Wilson College, where she played No. 2 singles and No. 1 doubles as a freshman. First-year Austin Peay coach Malik Tabet had developed a relationship with Tomic Vidovic, a Bosnia native, while he was at Indiana State… before the program was eliminated, and Tabet came to Austin Peay State University as coach.

APSU to induct Derek Wright into 2020 Austin Peay State University Athletics Hall of Fame

Austin Peay State University Sports - APSU - Governors - Lady GovsClarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University (APSU) alumni Derek Wright had just completed the finest game statistically in his basketball career. The senior guard scored 43 points in a 121-116 triple-overtime loss to Southeast Missouri, January 29th, 2008. It was the first time a Gov broke the 40-point barrier in nearly 11 seasons.

Of course, Wright was summoned after the game to talk to the media. Leaf-Chronicle reporter James Horne had a stat sheet in hand to show Wright that he not only scored 43 points but knocked down a career-best five three-pointers while collecting seven steals.

Austin Peay State University to induct Melissa Gailey-Luckey into 2020 APSU Athletics Hall of Fame

Austin Peay State University Sports - APSU - Governors - Lady GovsClarksville, TN – Thelma had Louise… Cagney had Lacey… Laverne had Shirley… In the annals of Austin Peay State University (APSU) volleyball, Isabel Canedo-Reagan had Melissa Gailey-Luckey.

Canedo-Reagan was the 1991 Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Year as an outside hitter. She was able to be so productive because Canedo-Reagan had her former junior college teammate, Gailey-Luckey, as her chief setter. The duo helped Austin Peay State University stun the league with the 1991 OVC Tournament Championship. In so doing, they became the first non-Kentucky team to win the crown and only the second Lady Govs program to earn an OVC crown.

APSU Hall of Fame Inductee Bob Swope: A Legend Revisited

Written by Brad Kirtley
APSU Sports Information Director Emeritus

Austin Peay State University Sports - APSU - Governors - Lady GovsClarksville, TNBrad Kirtley, who was Austin Peay’s Sports Information Director from 1984-2016 and is himself a Hall of Fame inductee, takes a look back at this year’s Hall of Fame inductees, concluding today with Bob Swope…

The stories abound…even some 70 years later. Call it the Legend of Bob Swope.

Swope, a Nashville native who starred at East High School (the late Edgar Allen, a longtime Nashville Banner sports writer called him the “best athlete to ever come out” of the school), joined the Navy out of high school and then attended Austin Peay via the GI Bill during the late 1940s.

Austin Peay State University Sports - APSU - Governors - Lady GovsClarksville, TNBrad Kirtley, who was Austin Peay’s Sports Information Director from 1984-2016 and is himself a Hall of Fame inductee, takes a look back at this year’s Hall of Fame inductees, continuing today with Erik Barnes…

Former Austin Peay golf coach Kirk Kayden, along with current Govs coach Robbie Wilson, were in Chandler, AZ, this past weekend, watching a trio of former Govs attempt to earn their playing cards in the Web.com Tour Qualifying Tournament.

Kayden, now the Mercer men’s golf coach, couldn’t help but gush about watching the three former Govs: “It was so much fun watching these guys getting a chance to realize their dreams. It was a pretty special thing, a once-in-a-lifetime deal…Three of your former players are playing in Web.com final. That just doesn’t happen. I had to make it work; I had to be there.”

APSU Hall of Fame Inductee Terrence Holt: The Greatest Game Changer

Written by Brad Kirtley
APSU Sports Information Director Emeritus

Austin Peay State University Sports - APSU - Governors - Lady GovsClarksville, TN Brad Kirtley, who was Austin Peay’s Sports Information Director from 1984-2016 and is himself a Hall of Fame inductee, takes a look back at this year’s Hall of Fame inductees, beginning with Terrence Holt…

It was the final game of the 2007 season. The Governors seemingly had the road contest in hand, leading 17-10 at Murray State late into the fourth quarter after forcing eight turnovers.

But the Racers avoided mistakes for one of the few times all day and drove 80 yards to tie the game with a little more than two minutes left. The home team certainly would have the momentum if overtime occurred, especially with some of the Govs’ offensive personnel hampered by injury.
