APSU Sports: Austin Peay Women’s Softball
Tulsa, OK – Austin Peay’s softball team jumped out to an early lead Sunday morning, in the consolation game of the Downtown Hyatt Tulsa Tournament, versus Loyola Chicago and never looked back in defeating the Ramblers, 8-1.
That would be all that de Castro (4-0) needed, as the Lady Govs starter only allowed three hits and one unearned run over six inning of work, while walking four and striking out four.
Junior Morgan Brewer came in and pitched a 1-2-3 seventh to close out the game.
Loyola Chicago (0-5) scored its run in the top of the second inning, aided by a throwing error by de Castro on a sacrifice bunt attempt, with the run coming in on a bases-loaded walk to Jessica Balzano.
The score would remain 2-1 until the bottom of the fourth inning, when the Lady Govs strung together four straight hits to score two runs.
Sophomore Kayla Davidson got things started with a one-out bad-hop single to shortstop and scored all the around from first on a double to left center field by freshman Sarah Rasmussen.
The double was Rasmussen’s team leading fifth double of the season.
Senior Amy Mills then singled to move Rasmussen to third, followed by sophomore Caitlyn Anderson – who came off the bench as a pinch hitter – single through the right side of the infield scoring Rasmussen to make it 4-1.
Austin Peay would blow the game open in the bottom of the sixth inning by scoring four runs, with freshman Lauren Bradley and Cozart driving in two runs each in the inning.
Mills and Cozart would record two hits each to lead the Lady Govs, with Cozart driving in three runs and stealing three bases, while Rasmussen and de Castro scored twice each.
The Lady Govs will continue their trip to the Sooner State with a Tuesday night game at eighth-ranked University of Oklahoma, starting at 5:00pm.
