Austin Peay Lady Govs Softball open busy week at the Lipscomb Bison

Austin Peay State University Lady GovsClarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University’s softball team will open a busy week, 4:00pm, Tuesday, with a non-conference doubleheader against Lipscomb at Draper Diamond in Nashville.

The Lady Govs (12-19) have been off since Wednesday, dropping an Ohio Valley Conference doubleheader to UT Martin. However, they will make up for the inactivity with six games this week.

Lipscomb (23-13) comes in having lost three of its last four, including dropping two Atlantic Sun Conference home games to Stetson, Saturday.

Austin Peay is led offensively by sophomore Lauren de Castro’s .392 batting average, along with team bests in runs scored (21) and RBI (20). She also leads the team in slugging percentage (.627), on-base percentage (.446), doubles (7) and walks (10) while is tied with redshirt junior Jessica Ryan for the team’s home run lead (5).

Paige NeelyFreshman Paige Neely also is hitting better than .300 on the season, including a team-best .571 average last week, to bring a .333 average into the doubleheader in her hometown. She also is second on the team in RBI (12) while cracking her first career home run versus UT Martin last week.

Senior catcher Amy Mills rounds out the Lady Govs .300 hitters, coming in with a .301 average and six doubles.

Morgan BrewerIn the circle, junior Morgan Brewer leads the Lady Govs pitching staff with a 6-8 win-loss mark this season and owns a 3.34 ERA to go with 78 strikeouts in 100.2 innings of work. Leading the team in ERA (2.60) is de Castro, who sports a 4-5 win-loss record with 42 strikeouts in 64.2 inning of work.

Senior Ashley Bolda and sophomore Taylor Mills also have Lady Govs’ pitching wins this season.

Lipscomb is led at the plate by Kelsey Cartwright, who sports a .372 batting average, with team bests in runs (29), home runs (11) and RBI (28).

Taylor MillsWhitney Kiihnl has been Lipscomb’s pitching staff workhorse, coming in with a 17-9 record, 164 strikeouts and a 1.48 ERA in 165 innings.

Tuesday’s doubleheader will be followed with a single Ohio Valley Conference game at UT Martin, Thursday, and a three-game OVC series versus Southeast Missouri this Saturday and Sunday at Cheryl Holt Field.
