Dunbar Cave State Park Programs for August 12th through August 18th

Clarksville, TNDunbar Cave State Natural Area has been a State Park since 1973. The cave and its surrounding 110 acres have considerable scenic, natural and historical significance. The entrance offered shelter to prehistoric Native Americans as far back as 10,000 years.

Dunbar Cave State Natural Area will present many nature programs this summer.

Upcoming events include: Night Hike, Stellaluna, Wildflower Walk, Nature Readings: Friends, Bird Feeders, Walnut Friends and so much more!

Programs are free unless noted otherwise. All programs require reservations by the deadline listed. Programs with no reservations by the deadline are canceled.

All programs begin at the Visitor Center unless another site is listed.

*Dunbar Cave State Park reserves the right to cancel some programs in case of extreme heat or inclement weather.

Children must be accompanied by an adult (one adult for each three children). The age limits are definite – please do not sign up a child who is too young or too old for the program. Call 931.648.5526 for reservations.

Monday, August 13th

Night Hike

Time: 7:45pm–9:00pm
Ages: All Ages

Here’s your chance to be in the park past closing time.  Wear sturdy shoes, bring water and walk a mile as we explore the woods and lakeshore for nocturnal critters such as bats, owls, deer, frogs, and raccoons, and listen for the calls of insects, frogs and owls.

Tuesday, August 14th

Stellaluna

Time: 2:30pm–3:15pm
Ages: 5 – 10

Come out for the reading of Stellaluna, a story about a baby bat who is separated from her mother, at the cave entrance.  We will meet at the Visitors Center and  walk to the cave together.

Evening Trail Hike

Time: 6:30pm-7:30pm
Ages: All ages

This time of day is great for seeing wildlife such as deer, owls and bats. Come walk the two mile trail and beat the heat.

Wednesday, August 15th

Wildflower Walk

Time: 6:30pm–7:30pm
Ages: 10-Adult

Learn the names and lore of the flowers on this hike to the cave and along the lake.

Reservations By: 4:30pm August 13th.

Thursday, August 16th

Nature Readings: Friends

Time: 3:30pm–4:00pm
Ages: 5-7

Meet at the cool cave entrance and listen to stories about friends in nature.

Reservations By: 4:30pm August 14th.


Friends of Dunbar Cave Meeting

Time: 6:00pm–7:00pm

Friday, August 17th

Micro Hike

Time: 3:00pm–4:00pm
Ages: 4 – 8

Get down and dirty on the ground to discover insects and their habitats.

Program Leader: Adam Neblett, Park Ranger
Reservations By: 4:30pm August 15th.

Saturday, August 18th

Bird Feeders

Time: 10:00am–10:45am
Ages: 5 – 10

Make a fun feeder (with pine cones, peanut butter and bird seed) to feed the birds.

Reservations By: 4:30pm August 16th.


Walnut Friends

Time: 2:00pm–2:30pm
Ages: 5 and up

Make a fun walnut figure as you learn about this nut.

Bats Are fun

Time: 6:30pm–8:00pm
Ages: 5 – 11

We will learn about bats through videos and books, then walk along the lake to the cave entrance and see if we can spot some bats flying through the night sky.
