Two late turnovers help Rossview High School Football outlast Kenwood High School in District 10-AAA shootout

Rossview High School HawksKenwood High SchoolClarksville, TN – Rossview High School and Kenwood High School combined for 1,161 yards of total offense and 103 points in their District 10-AAA match up, October 4th, but it was two late turnovers by the Knights that proved to be the biggest turning point, as the Hawks came away with a 59-44 victory.

Rossview (6-1, 3-1 District 10-AAA) led Kenwood by 16 points, 52-36, heading into the final quarter; but got it back to a one-score game just 52 second into the final period on a 9-yard run by Knights quarterback Malcolm Perry – who followed with a two-point conversion run, to make it 52-44.

Perry would finish the night with five touchdowns and 396 yards rushing in the losing effort.

Kenwood’s defense would then hold Rossview’s offense from scoring on the following drive – the first time in nine Hawk drives in the game – getting the ball back on their own 32, with 7:35 left in the game down eight.

But a low snap from center got away from Perry on the first play of the drive and was recovered by the Rossview defense at the Knights 24 yard line, for their second takeaway of the night.

That would be the break that the Hawks needed to ice the game away, as the turnover led to a 1-yard touchdown run by Hawks quarterback Charles Talleyrand, with four minutes left in the game, to put them up two scores over the Knights (3-4, 2-2 District 10-AAA).

Talleyrand ran for three touchdowns and 168 yards total on the ground. He would also throw for 293 yards and three touchdowns.

Kenwood would have one last gasp to try to get back into the game, but their second interception of the night on their next drive put the nail into any kind of comeback, as the Hawks ran out the clock.

In the first half, the two teams would combine for 66 points, with Rossview scoring on each of its possessions in scoring 38 first-half points, while Kenwood was only stopped twice in the first half — on an interception and once on downs – in scoring 28 points.

Isaiah Johnson got the scoring going for Rossview by taking a pass from Talleyrand and outrunning the Knight defense for a 93-yard touchdown and a 7-0 lead.

Kenwood would respond on it first play from scrimmage with a 65-yard touchdown run by Perry – who added the two-point conversion – to give the Knights its only lead of the game, 8-7.

Rossview would close out the first quarter by scoring 10 straight points, the first three on a 27-yard field goal by Christian Kubas and the final seven on a TD run of 64 yards by Talleyrand.

As wild as the first quarter was the second 12 minutes of play was even more so.

The two teams went back-and-fourth in the second quarter, trading six touchdowns in the period, with Rossview scoring the final points of the first half on the final play – a 15-yard pass from Talleyrand to Dominic Stancescu – to give the Hawks a 10-point advantage at intermission, 38-28.

Both teams return to District 10-AAA action October 11th, as Rossview travel to West Creek High School and Kenwood travels to Springfield High School.
