Murray, KY – The 2015 season came to an end for Austin Peay State University women’s soccer team, Thursday, falling 2-1 to Murray State at Cutchin Field.
The Lady Govs (8-10-0, 4-6-0 OVC) needed at least one point to have a chance at making the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament.
Despite a hard-fought effort against the regular-season champions, APSU came up just short in its quest to reach the postseason.
The Racers (14-4-0, 10-0-0 OVC) scored the opening goal in the seventh minute after winning the ball in the APSU half.
Taylor Stevens delivered a pass to Harriet Withers in the box, who then played a soft, low cross to Taylor Richerson who slotted it home.
Both teams recorded five shots in the first half, while Murray State maintained a possession advantage which included five corner kicks. On two occasions, the Lady Govs pressed the MSU back line, but keeper Alex Steigerwald came off her line to deny scoring chances.
One minute into the second half, senior Shelby Olszewski played a short pass to the feet of junior Gina Fabbro, who made an inside turn to separate herself and fired a strike from just outside the 18-yard box.
Austin Peay pressed all numbers forward in the closing seconds, earning a free kick and corner, but were unsuccessful as the Racers held on to complete the undefeated 10-0-0 conference season.
