Lady Govs host SIUE to close out 2011 softball slate

Clarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University’s softball team will close out its 2011 schedule this weekend by playing host to the Ohio Valley Conference’s newest member, Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, for a three-game series at Cheryl Holt Field.

The series opens with a, 1:00pm, Saturday doubleheader and concludes Sunday with a 1:00pm, single game.

Austin Peay (11-38, 6-21 OVC) was eliminated OVC post-season tournament qualification last weekend, with its losses at Tennessee Tech, while SIU Edwardsville (26-27, 17-10 OVC) will come into the series playing for seeding in the tournament.

The Cougars currently hold the No. 4 seed for next week’s OVC Tournament, but could finish as high as the second seed or as low as fifth seed.

Offensively the Lady Govs are led by junior Catie Cozart (.262, 3 HR, 14 RBI), with freshman Lauren de Castro right behind her (.260, 3 HR, 14 RBI).

Sophomore Morgan Brewer leads the Lady Govs pitching staff with a 7-16 win-loss mark, with a 4.13 ERA and 68 strikeouts in 151 innings of work this season.

SIU Edwardsville is led offensively by Taylor Tooley (.338, 7 HR, 39 RBI), while Erika Taylor tops the Cougars pitchers with a 19-15 record, with a 2.61 ERA and 237 strikeouts in 219.2 innings in the circle.

Austin Peay also will celebrate Senior Day, Sunday, as the Lady Govs will honor this year’s two seniors Randal Davenport and Tiffany Smith in a pre-game ceremony.
