Clarksville, TN – Infielder Reed Harper has been named one of 30 baseball finalists for the 2013 Senior CLASS Award®.
An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School®, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence – community, classroom, character and competition.
On the field, Harper has played in every Austin Peay contest during his career – a streak of 182 consecutive games played entering this weekend’s series against Michigan State. He is one of only two players to record 200 career hits in only three seasons at Austin Peay and his 211 career hits is tied for 10th most all-time.
Last season, Harper was one of 50 shortstops nationwide to be named to the Brooks Wallace Award Watch List. He finished his junior campaign with a .327 batting average, 17 doubles and 36 RBI and was selected to the Ohio Valley Conference all-tournament team.
Harper has been active in the Clarksville High School Life Skills Program and is an active member of Austin Peay’s Fellowship of Christian Athletes chapter. In addition, he has participated in the annual Govs Give Back Charity event and in Austin Peay’s free baseball camp each season during his career and has been active in supporting Clarksville-area little leagues.
Harper was one of two OVC baseball student-athletes named to the 30-man finalists list. He was joined by Belmont pitcher Chase Brookshire. The complete list of candidates may be found online at www.seniorclassaward.com.
The candidate class will be narrowed to 10 finalists midway through the regular season, and those names will be placed on the official ballot. Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches and fans, who will select one finalist who best exemplifies excellence in the four Cs of community, classroom, character and competition. The Senior CLASS Award winner will be announced during the 2013 NCAA College World Series® in Omaha June 15-26
