APSU has Six Golf Govs playing in Skyhawk Classic

Austin Peay State University Governors Sports - APSUBuchanan, TN – With former Golf Gov Dustin Korte added to the coaching staff for 2013-14, Austin Peay State University’s golf team is taking advantage of providing experience to the team’s remaining members when six Governors play as individuals, Monday and Tuesday, in the Skyhawks Classic, to be played at Paris Landing State Park.

The two-day, 54-hole event, hosted by UT Martin, will be played on the par-72, 6,685-yard course, a part of the Tennessee Golf Trail, located just off US Highway 79.

With the so-called current starters playing at the Traditions in Hebron, KY, the Governors will take junior Tucker Wallace, redshirt sophomore Korey Smith, senior Alasdair MacLennan, redshirt sophomore Cleve Guinn and freshmen Erik Hedberg and Oliver Dickson to Paris Landing. Wallace and Smith played extensively for the Governors a year ago, with Wallace a part of the lineup that won the 2013 Ohio Valley Conference and played in the NCAA Tempe Regional.

It will be Dickson’s second college tourney—he played as an individual at the Cardinal Intercollegiate. It will be the first tourney for Hedberg, whose sister stars on the Florida golf team.

Korte, who played in the NCAA championship last spring, is serving as Kayden’s assistant this season while continuing his work to become a professional.

“It will be great to get all of our guys in an event this week as they are anxious to compete,” APSU coach Kirk Kayden said. “I am looking forward to seeing how the six guys going to Martin can stack up against many of the OVC schools starters.

“This is something new we are going to try this week and it will give our whole team a chance to compete two straight weeks (F&M Intercollegiate is next Monday and Tuesday) before the offseason.

“With a split season like we have you never know who will play each semester so these next two weeks will be good indicator going into spring.”

In addition to UT Martin, two other Ohio Valley Conference programs also will be represented—Murray State and Tennessee State. In addition, the tourney field also includes Alabama State, Bethel, Christian Brothers, Dalton State, IPFW, Jackson State, Lee, Southern Illinois and Union plus junior college John A. Logan.
