APSU Basketball’s Terry Taylor, Carlos Paez earn back to back OVC Weekly Honors

APSU Men's BasketballBrentwood, TN – For the second week in a row, Austin Peay State University (APSU) men’s basketball players Terry Taylor and Carlos Paez have earned acclaim from the Ohio Valley Conference, sharing the league’s Player and Freshman of the Week honors, respectively.

For another week, Taylor was the obvious catalyst for the Govs, leading Austin Peay State University in scoring at Arkansas and against North Florida.

Against the Razorbacks, his layup to beat the first-half buzzer sent the APSU Govs into the locker room down just four on the road; he scored 11 of his game-high 20 in the second half.

Against the Ospreys, he put up a customary 20-point, 12-rebound effort for his season’s third double-double while blocking three shots and grabbing two steals. He scored 18 of his 20 in the second half as the Govs held the Ospreys at bay.

Taylor is averaging 25.5 points on 67.2 percent (43-for-64) from the floor, with 10.5 rebounds, 2.3 blocked shots and 1.5 steals per contest over the last four games. He’s now taken at least a share of the honors in three straight weeks, making him the first player in program history to earn three straight OVC Player of the Week honors; he now has seven Player of the Week honors for his career.

Paez’s performance was once again instrumental to Austin Peay State University’s success last week. While held to 6 points at Arkansas, both came on clutch threes to keep the Govs in the contest. The North Florida game is where he really shined, scoring 16 points on perfect shooting nights from the floor (6-of-6) and three (4-of-4) while handing out seven assists.

According to CollegeBasketballReference.com’s Play Index, he’s the first Division I player this season to post 100 percent showings from the floor (minimum six attempts) and from deep (minimum four attempts), and the first player to have those percentages in a game with seven or more assists since Eastern Illinois’ Terrell Lewis (February 12th, 2015 against the APSU Govs).

In Paez’s last four games, he’s averaging 11.5 points on 54.5 percent (12-of-22) from the floor and 60.0 percent (9-of-15) from three, averaging 3.8 assists and 1.8 steals during those contests. He and teammate Jordyn Adams have earned the last four Freshman of the Week honors; collectively, they have made Austin Peay State University the first program to earn four straight Freshman of the Week nods since Eastern Kentucky’s Nick Mayo won four in a row, January 18th-February 15th, 2016.

They are the first teammates to split four in a row since three different Jacksonville State players earned honors to begin the 2008-09 season.

Taylor, Paez and the APSU Govs are back on the road this week to take on Big 12 West Virginia, 7:00pm, Thursday, December 12th in Morgantown.
