Austin Peay (7-7, 1-0) v.s UT Martin (4-8, 0-1)
Saturday, January 4th, 2020 | 4:00pm CT
Clarksville, TN – With the Ohio Valley Conference opener under its belt, Austin Peay State University (APSU) men’s basketball team can now turn its collective attention to one of the oldest rivalries in the league when UT Martin visits as part of the second half of a Saturday afternoon doubleheader in the Dunn Center.
The women’s game begins at 1:30pm, with the men to follow roughly a half-hour after its conclusion.
This will be the last chance for Governor fans to catch Austin Peay State University at home until well into the conference slate; after this game, the Govs are on the road for four—at Tennessee Tech, Jacksonville State and the return trip to Southeast Missouri and UT Martin—before hosting Tennessee State, January 23rd.
After an arduous road sojourn that stretched west to Tulsa, north to Morgantown and south to St. Petersburg, Florida, the road will soften considerably for the Govs after January, with only one lengthy trip—to Charleston and Edwardsville in late February—remaining after the upcoming four-gamer.
About the UT Martin Skyhawks
UT Martin has had difficulty stopping the three-ball in 2019-20. How much difficulty?
Murray State hit 10 of 15 from deep in UT Martin’s league opener; Jaiveon Eaves, who had 11 threes in 10 games, hit four against the Skyhawks. Jordyn Adams, Carlos Paez and Terry Taylor–who each hit at least three three-pointers against Southeast Missouri–will look to take advantage of their matchups along the perimeter.
On the other end of the court, the Govs will have their hands full containint Parker Stewart and Quintin Dove, a 1-2 punch offensively that rivals Taylor and Adams or any other high-scoring duo in the league. With Memphis transfer Craig Randall II no longer with the program, the Skyhawks have seen Derek Hawthorne Jr. step up, averaging 12.7 points, 6.0 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 2.0 steals over the last three games.
Last Time Out Against UT Martin
It was a Senior Night to remember for one Zach Glotta–the former Austin Peay State University guard and current team chaplain–who scored a career-high 26 points on eight three-pointers, one short of the single-game program record as the Govs polished off the Skyhawks 92-78, January 23rd, 2019.
Even with Glotta’s herculean performance, which included five first-half threes, the Govs trailed at halftime before pulling away by outscoring UT Martin 30-19 over the final 10 minutes, with Terry Taylor contributing 12 of his 25 points during this stretch.
Keep An Eye On
A win would be Austin Peay State University’s fifth straight against the Skyhawks, longest in the series since the Govs won six in a row from 2010-12.
Taylor is one of only two players in Division I leading their respective league in scoring and rebounding, along with Hampton’s Ben Stanley, who leads the Big Sky in both.
Austin Peay State University boasts an average rebound margin of plus-3.6 over the last five games.
Austin Peay State University’s home winning streak could reach double digits for the first time since 2007-08 with a win Saturday.
Taylor is one of 13 active Division I players with 1500 career points and 700 career rebounds, and the only member of that club who has yet to finish his junior season.
In their seven wins, the Govs are now hitting 52.8 percent (220-for-417) from the floor in wins and 38.1 percent (153-for-402) in seven losses; APSU is 6-0 when outshooting its opponent this season.
Paez is up to a 4.25-to-one assist-to-turnover ratio in the four games since he moved into the starting lineup. Between Paez (3.0) and Antwuan Butler (1.9), Austin Peay State University,is the only team in the OVC with two players among the league’s top-six in assist-to-turnover ratio.
