Land Between The Lakes Events and Programs for December 2013

Land Between the Lakes - LBLGolden Pond, KY – Land Between The Lakes (LBL) National Recreation Area invites you to any of the programs listed below or to come outside to camp, hike, bike, ride, drive, relax, fish, boat, hunt, learn, picnic, and more.

The Elk & Bison Prairie, drive through wildlife viewing area, is open all year, dawn until dusk. Admission is  $5.00 per vehicle.

Golden Pond Planetarium is open daily, except for December 24th-26th; December 30th-31st; and January 1st. Admission is $5.00 Ages 13 & up; $3.00 Ages 5-12 for Daytime Shows and $7.00 all ages for evening Laser Shows.

The Homeplace and Woodlands Nature Station will close for the season after November 30th, except for special events, see below.

Elk & Bison Prairie

Elk & Bison PrairieThe Elk & Bison Prairie is a restoration of a native habitat. Elk and bison were reintroduced to this area and roam freely within a 700-acre enclosure. Numerous other wildlife species also thrive in the Prairie, such as wild turkeys, a variety of birds, small prairie mammals. Visitors can enjoy the area via a 3.5-mile loop road.

There are three interpretive stops along the route for visitors to learn more about prairie ecosystem. Winter is a great time to see wildlife in the Prairie and throughout Land Between The Lakes. Elk & Bison Prairie is open daily from dawn until dusk all year, $5.00 per vehicle                    

1850 Holiday Decorations & Treats Workshop

10:00am to 3:00pm, Saturday, December 7th

Step back in time at The Homeplace to make two different Victorian decorations and one tasty, traditional treat to eat, all materials are supplied.

Pre-registration and payment required: $50.00 | Bring your lunch.  Call 270.924.2020 to reserve your space.

Special Holiday Season Shows in addition to regular programming

Season of Light: Trace the history and development of holiday traditions that involve light to include historical, religious, and cultural rituals practiced during the time of winter solstice.

Laser Holidays: Enjoy your favorite holiday tunes as you watch lasers dance overhead — Dance of the Sugarplum Fairy, Winter Wonderland, Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer, White Christmas, Frosty the Snowman, Carol of the Bells, and All I want for Christmas is You. Offered during day and at 5:30pm December 14th and 21st.

Audubon Christmas Bird Count

6:00am to 1:30pm with optional 4:30pm | 270.924.2299

Birders and want to be birders! Join us for this nationwide event. We will meet at the Nature Station and break off into teams and meet back for our lunch-time roundup of the morning’s sightings. Bring binoculars, field guides, snacks, and lunch. Dress for the weather.

Civil War Comes to the Homeplace

10:00am to 3:00pm farm family and encampment | 1:00pm Theater Presentation

Regular admission: Ages 13 and up $5.00 | 5-12 $3.00 | 4 and under free

Fast forward to 1863: learn how they persevered though the hardships of war between the rivers; Visit the Confederate encampment and learn how civilians coped with their new role as soldiers.
