Morehead, KY – Austin Peay State University women’s basketball team ended a 10-game losing streak with an 83-75 Ohio Valley Conference victory against Morehead State, Monday night at Johnson Arena.
Austin Peay (4-13, 1-3 OVC) led wire-to-wire for its first win since November 30th against Central Arkansas. The win also ended the Lady Govs seven-game OVC losing streak dating back to last season.
The Lady Govs used a balanced scoring attack to post the win with five players scoring more than 10 points. Sophomore Tiasha Gray, who came off the bench for the first time this season, led Austin Peay with a 19-point, six-steal performance. Senior Nicole Olszewski chipped in 11 points with nine rebounds and seven assists.
Austin Peay scored the game’s first six points and led by as many as nine points in the opening six minutes. Morehead State hit a pair of three-pointers as part of a 7-0 run to push the lead back to two points with 11:54 remaining.
The Lady Govs responded with a 15-4 run to push their lead into double-digit territory, 29-16, with 3:22 left. Gray was one of six APSU players to hit a shot during the run and had six points during the outburst. Freshman Tearra Banks ended the half’s scoring with a traditional three-point play to give Austin Peay a 33-23 halftime advantage.
Austin Peay fended off the run with the next five points and then used a 12-2 run to build a 19-point advantage with nine minutes left. Again five different Lady Govs scored during the run with Gray scoring five points.
The Lady Govs would need nearly all of that lead in the closing minutes. Morehead State found its range in the final 7:30, hitting all six of its second-half three-pointers in that six-minute span.
The Eagles would get even closer and trailed by five points, 78-73, with 33 seconds left.
Austin Peay finally stabilized the lead at the free-throw line, making 5-of-6 in the final 33 seconds to secure the lead and ultimately the win.
Gray and Olszewski were joined by junior Kirsten Stainback (17 points) and freshman Beth Rates (13) in double-digit scoring territory. In addition, sophomore Jennifer Nwokocha scored her third double-double in the last five games with 14 points and 10 rebounds.
