Hilltop Super Market’s 1st Annual Country Boy Cook-Off a slam dunk success

Hilltop SupermarketClarksville, TN – Hilltop Super Market held their 1st Annual Country Boy Cook-Off Friday night, May 1st and hundreds attended. This was an amateur BBQ cooking contest for the local community.

There was a car show, live music and plenty of food for everyone like BBQ chicken, smoked BBQ, ribs and plenty of fixings.

This was young Reilly Mihalinec’s first time entering a BBQ contest. “It’s been awesome so far. Right now, I am barbecuing chicken.”

Hilltop had a tent set up selling everything you needed from charcoal to BBQ marinades and BBQ sauces for cooking out. “I think it’s a really good event. It’s good for the community, good for the store and the products, said Walter Axley. “I’m here bootlegging Hellbilly Moonshiners Grilling n’ dipping Sauces.”

The Country Boy Cook-Off consisted of two categories: Chicken (Any Parts) and Chef’s choice (Anything you can cook on a grill). 1st place won $200.00 and 2nd place got a trophy.

Scooby Eads was cooking on a custom grill he had made himself. “I got my idea for my grill from something I saw on the internet,” stated Eads. “I have tools as my handles. It has a full flue damper in the middle that opens everything up.”

When asked what he thought about the event, Eads said, “It’s been pretty fun really. It’s our first time. We’ve been here since 9:00am this morning and have cooked a little of everything today. For the contest I am cooking a bacon, mushroom cheeseburger ball, and chicken.”

The Back Lot Pickers kicked off the music for the evening at 6:00pm. Later, Modern Day Drifters took over later jamming till late in the evening.

Judging for the event started at 8:00pm. The contestants were Lil Croatia, Marshbanks, Butts, Lil A’s, Bottomless, Smoke Kin, Happy Pappy and Crippler.

“This was an amateur cooking event. Surprising enough, they had some great flavor on their chicken,” said James Brawner of Team Grillin’ & Chillin’. “Some were a little over cooked and under cooked. But they really tasted good.”

“All of the entries were really good. The two rules of bbq cooking is to make sure you get something done and you dont burn it up. So, everything I ate was done and they didn’t burn it up so they were all solid entries,” stated Brawner.

Once the judging was done and the scoring completed, the winners were announced. Lil A’s came in 2nd place and Smoke Kin took home 1st.

“Tonight’s event went excellent. It was awesome. It was a big turnout. We had great support from the community,” said Hilltop manager Cody Jackson. “We could not have hoped for any better. Everyone here had a good time.”

“All the bbqers loved it. Some of the professional bbqers were judges for the Country Boy Cook Off. They enjoyed doing that. They love this community, we have and the nice response they got from the crowd that was here tonight,” stated Jackson.
