Austin Peay State University Govs Tennis make headway at ITA Ohio Valley Regional

Austin Peay State University Governors - APSUKnoxville, TN – While competing against the top players in the area, Austin Peay State University men’s tennis team made strides this weekend in the ITA Ohio Valley Regional at the University of Tennessee.

All six active members played two singles matches in the tournament, along with three doubles contests.

The main draw singles bracket was highlighted by junior Aaron Jumonville, who knocked off seventh-ranked Daniel Bednarczyk, of Indiana, 7-5, 7-6 (6) in a competitive match.

In the second round, Jumonville fell to Tennessee’s Preston Touliatos, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2.

Junior Manuel Montenegro also advanced in the draw, defeating Murray State’s David Hess, 5-7, 6-3, 6-2. However, he was stopped by Tennessee’s Igor Smelyanski in the next stage, 6-2, 6-0.

Sophomore Aleh Drobysh lost to Butler’s Mason Dragos, 6-2, 6-4, senior Evan Borowski fell to Courtney Lock, of Louisville, 6-0, 6-1, freshman Chad Woodham was upended by 16th seed Luis Valero, of Tennessee, 6-3, 6-0, while freshman Taylor Graalman dropped a match to IUPUI’s David Beasley, 7-6, 6-1.

In consolation play following main draw exits, Lucas Dages (Purdue) def. Borowski, 6-2, 6-4, Court Clark (NKU) def. Woodham, 2-6, 7-5 (6), Jorge Alfonso (TTU) def. Graalman, 6-2, 6-4, and Ricardo Pabon (ETSU) def. Drobysh, 6-2, 6-2.

In doubles action, each match was decided, 8-4. Antonio Cembellin and Elliot Yee (IU) def. Drobysh and Woodham, Nick Mercer and Sabastian Penaloza (Morehead) def. Borowski and Graalman, while Jeremy Schneider and Arthur Stefani (Xavier) def. Jumonville and Montenegro.

Austin Peay returns to the court for its final fall tournament in two weeks, October 31st-November 2nd, at the Louisville Invitational.
