Instant Peay Play: APSU Softball, Track and Field teams via for championships this week


Instant Peay Play - APSU SportsClarksville, TN – Two more Austin Peay State University (APSU) spring sports teams head to their respective OVC Championships this week, with softball heading to Choccolocco Park in Oxford, AL, May 8th-11th and track & field heading to Abe Stuber Track Complex in Cape Girardeau, MO, May 9th-11th looking to add to the Women’s OVC Tennis Championship title.

The Govs softball team (31-20 16-6 OVC) enter their tournament as the third-overall seed, falling a win short of tying for the OVC regular-season title on May 5th, and will face the winner of an Wednesday morning elimination game between sixth-seed Belmont and seventh-seed UT Martin.

The Govs swept both of those teams during the regular season, with the Govs taking two from the Bruins at Cathi Maynard Park-Cheryl Holt Field back on March 29th, by 9-1 and 6-3 finals, while defeating the Skyhawks this past weekend in Martin, TN, at Bettye Giles Field, in 3-2 and 4-1 finals.

Overall, the Govs went 9-5 during the regular-season versus teams in this week’s tournament field.

Austin Peay will enter the tournament as one of the top offensive teams in the tournament, with six starters batting over .300 on the season, led by freshman Lexi Osowski’s .406 average and senior Danielle Liermann’s .370 batting average and OVC-leading 18 home runs.

The Govs also have one of the best one-two punches in the OVC in their pitching core, with senior Morgan Rackel posting a 20-7 record this spring – including a 1.99 ERA and 219 strikeouts, while junior Kelsey Gross has put together a 7-1 win-loss mark this season, with a 2.08 ERA and 41 strikeouts.

Southeast Missouri is the tournament’s overall number-one seed, while defending tournament champions Jacksonville State enters as the tournament second-seed.

While the Govs softball team already be in the thick of the fight in their championship tournament, the Govs women’s outdoor track and field team begins in chase for a title on Thursday.

The Govs have posted some of the best times and event marks in the OVC this spring, including the fastest time in the 400-meter run (Sabrina Richman, 55.21) and the 4×400 relay team (3:47.09) and Savannah Amato’s height in the pole vault (12-feet-11.5 inches).

Austin Peay has also posted the second fastest times in the 200 meters (Kyra Wilder, 24.29), the 10,000 meters (Emmaculate Kiplagat, 37:42.39) 100-meter hurdles (Lennex Walker, 13.99), pole vault (Dascha Hix, 12-foot-5.5 inches).

Two more OVC titles on the line this week and two Austin Peay State University teams that could make strong runs at earning them.
