Major League Baseball to delay Opening Day at least 2 weeks, Spring Training games cancelled

 

Major League BaseballNew York, NY – Major League Baseball has cancelled the remainder of its Spring Training games, also announcing that the start of the 2020 regular season will be delayed by at least two weeks due to the national emergency created by the coronavirus pandemic.

The decision was announced following a call with all 30 Clubs and after consultation with the Major League Baseball Players Association. Opening Day was originally scheduled for Thursday, March 26th, 2020.

Minor League Baseball to delay start of 2020 Season

 

Minor League BaseballSt. Petersburg, FL – Minor League Baseball (MiLB) issued the following statement today:

“In light of the current coronavirus outbreak, and after consultation with medical professionals and our partners at Major League Baseball, Minor League Baseball will delay the start of the 2020 Championship Season. We will continue to monitor the developments and will announce additional information about the 2020 season at a later date. ”

Nashville Sounds announce Vanderbilt Baseball Games cancelled at First Horizon Park

 

Nashville SoundsNashville, TN – The Nashville Sounds Baseball Club regrets to announce today the Vanderbilt vs. Belmont game on March 17th and Vanderbilt vs. Lipscomb game on March 24th to be played at First Horizon Park have been cancelled due to damages sustained from the tornado this past week.

“We’re very disappointed to not be able to host these two events at First Horizon Park in 2020,” said Sounds General Manager Adam Nuse. “We fully support these brilliant baseball programs, but at this time our primary focus is to have First Horizon Park functioning as best as we can for Opening Day on April 9th.”

National Hockey League pauses season due to Coronavirus

 

National Hockey LeagueNew York, NY – National Hockey League (NFL) Commissioner Gary Bettman on Thursday, March 12th, 2020 released the following statement regarding the 2019-20 NHL season:

“In light of ongoing developments resulting from the coronavirus, and after consulting with medical experts and convening a conference call of the Board of Governors, the National Hockey League is announcing today that it will pause the 2019-20 season beginning with tonight’s games.

“The NHL has been attempting to follow the mandates of health experts and local authorities, while preparing for any possible developments without taking premature or unnecessary measures.”

SEC Men’s Basketball Tournament will be staff, family only

 

Southeastern Conference - SECBirmingham, AL – The Southeastern Conference has announced it will conduct the 2020 SEC Men’s Basketball Tournament with only essential staff, limited family and credentialed media in attendance at Bridgestone Arena in Nashville for the remainder of the week beginning on Thursday following the recommendation of the NCAA COVID-19 Advisory Panel related to conducting sporting events closed to the public.

In addition, the SEC announced that all regular season contests in all sports on SEC campuses and SEC Championship events will be conducted with similar attendance restrictions effective Thursday, March 12th through at least March 30th at which time the conference and its member universities will re-evaluate conditions.
