Austin Peay State University has 174 student athletes named to Fall honor roll

Clarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University’s 331 student-athletes posted a 2.944 grade-point average during the recently completed Fall 2013 semester, the athletics department announced Tuesday.

The 2.944 cumulative GPA accumulated by the department’s student-athletes was the fourth-best mark in program history. It also is the third consecutive semester the group posted a 2.90 GPA or better.

“Our academic success is a measure of who we are and what we stand for and is the most important thing we work on,” said Austin Peay athletics director Derek van der Merwe. “We work on many things in this department to help us grow and be successful, but the cornerstone of our success is creating a culture of academic excellence supported by our academic services staff and coaches. We are achieving this with student-athletes who value their experience as students at Austin Peay.”

The department named 174 student-athletes to the Fall 2013 Athletics Director’s Honor Roll, representing 52.6 percent of the department’s student-athletes. Included in that tally were 26 student-athletes named to the President’s List – recording a perfect 4.0 GPA during the semester – and 88 student-athletes named to APSU’s Dean’s List, earning a 3.5 or better GPA.

Ten of the department’s 16 teams posted a 3.0 GPA for the semester, led by the men’s tennis team which posted a 3.58 GPA, with four of the team’s six members named to the Dean’s List, including three that received President’s List honors.

The other teams posting 3.0 or better GPAs were women’s basketball (3.444), women’s volleyball (3.437), women’s cross country (3.396), women’s tennis (3.355), women’s soccer (3.347), softball (3.270), women’s golf (3.248) and men’s golf (3.00).

Established in 1990-91, the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll recognizes the outstanding academic accomplishments of Austin Peay State University student-athletes. To earn recognition student-athletes must achieve at least a 3.0 grade-point average for a semester.

The Austin Peay athletics department will recognize the student-athletes named to the honor roll during halftime of the February 13th men’s basketball contest against Eastern Illinois.
